Isle music: Steel guitar

Hello ukulelist friends! This is the second part of the history of island music, in the previous blog we talked a little about Hawaiian music history and Polynesian traditions.

The Hula is the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.

King David Kalakaua

More than strumming and singing, the particular sound of the ukulele is the steel guitar. Technique initiated by Joseph Kekuku, a colleague from oahu, in 1889; In 1904, Kekuku left Hawaii, and popularized the style by playing in the US. This technique played a decisive role in the development of delta blues and became a key component of country music.

Many Hawaiian musicians followed in the wake of Kekuku, their music was disseminated thanks to the San Francisco International Exhibition and the itinerant musical of Brodway The bird of Paradise.

Thinking about the American public and the growing number of tourists visiting Hawaii, the songs often translated, partly and entirely into English. He was born in a new hybrid genre, Hapa haole (foreign medium).

These songs sought a novel or comic effect by underlining the supposedly absurd sound of Hawaiian words.
However, the best teachers of Steel guitar Bennie Nawai and Sol Ho´opi´i, achieved a world renown for their talent.

The genre was changing with the changes of popular taste, drifting towards Jazz and Blues, in the 1920s and 1930s, towards the swing in the 40's and rock and roll in the 50's.

It can be said that much of the modern music of the Hawaiian Islands remains Hapa Haole, because several elements of soft rock were absorbed in the 1970s, and then the style called «Jawaiian», I incorporate Reggae.

This is the second part of the tour, in the next one I will tell you about how he became the versatile Ukulele we know today.
