Hi Ukulelists! They said "are we not going to have part 3 of the History of island music?", Of course, this is the last part of this trilogy of Blogs in which we talk about island music and the origins of ukulele. This time we will talk about how it was growing its popularity until it is known today.
Officially the first ukulele is presented at a party aboard the British yacht Nyanza in 1889. During the celebration a trio of women, among which were Princess Victoria Kaiulani, (niece of King David Kalākaua), who played the ukulele.
Over time the instrument became increasingly associated in the culture and traditions of the island. It eventually became a symbol of Hawaii that represented the Land and local nature. It was built with koa wood, native from the area, and thus it became very popular among the natives.
In the sixties and seventies, there is a revival of Ukulele as a symbol of Hawaiian tradition. Artists like Eddie Kamae of the group Sons of HawaiiPeter Moon and Herb Ohta were promoters of this movement, which they subsequently took over Israel IZ Kamakawiwo´ole with the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau and later solo and groups like Ka´au Crater Boys with Troy Fernandez.
Today there are an endless number of groups and solo artists who play this beautiful instrument, either for its ease of transport, to play it or simply because it is perfect to accompany their songs; The ukulele has undoubtedly become the favorite instrument of many.
As is the case with Melissa Robles who has a channel dedicated to covers and tutorials of Ukulele:
In another tab we go to Natalia Lafourcade, who has an extensive musical career and who has chosen to integrate the ukulele into his music as well:
We also have the talented Josean Log, who has a deep love for this instrument, and demonstrates it with his endless songs performed with our favorite instrument:
We cannot forget our favorites as they are Andrea Corona y My Nephew Memo, who have created their own music and footprint with this instrument:
This was a bit of the history of the ukulele, and just a little of the many artists that are shining with this beautiful instrument.
Tell me who do you know who should join this list of recognized artists?
