One of the advantages of ukulele is that it can be easily transported thanks to its small size. Surely some other musician came up with making his instrument as small as the ukulele to make it easier to load. I show you the instruments that went to ukulele size and sound amazing.
El banjolele It is a combination of a banjo and a ukulele. The special and most characteristic is the soundboard that is mainly made of wood with a resonator cone of special metal for the banjo and a patch like a drum, this makes it have a high volume and those squeaky accents characteristic of the banjo. It is tuned just like a standard ukulele. It is a good ally for Jazz music.
With guitalele we refer to the baritone ukulele that is tuned as the first four strings of the guitar. We refer to the same as a guitar (smaller) with six strings only that this one earns the name of Guitalele because it is tuned in A like the traditional ukulele unlike the standard guitar, changing its tuning from [E, A, D, G, B, E] to [A, D, G, C, E, A]. To achieve this tuning it is necessary that the strings have a caliber smaller than that of a guitar. So do not try your normal guitar because surely you will burst more than one string.
El U-Bass It is a bass with the size of a ukulele. To achieve the sound of a bass they had to put thick strings but this implied a problem, they could not be made of steel, so normally a U-bass has silicone strings. Although there are some that have metal strings, they do not reach serious sounds such as silicone. If you want a clear sound, electric U-bass is the best option.
Normally this instrument is known as a ukulele with resonator since the word Dobro became a registered trademark and using that name is limited only to certain companies for certain instruments. The dobro is like a guitar only that with a metal resonator inside, it is played mainly in an open tuning (in our ukulele it is enough to tune the string from A to G) as G. It was popularized for blues style music.
I also didn't believe it existed until it occurred to me to look for it. More than an instrument that was made ukulele, it is a combination of a small piano with a ukulele, there is not much information about this instrument but a video that you can see giving click here
We can imagine how many ukulele-sized instruments and try to see if they have already manufactured it or designed it ourselves. What instrument would you make ukulele size?
