How do you strum?

Aloha friends of Ukuleleria!

Today we are going to dedicate a blog to that question that many people have asked us in Instagram, Facebook y YouTube.

How do you strum?

Many times we already have our Ukulele and we know some steps to make chords, but when it comes to strumming we fail, we feel that we cannot do it well and we do not like the sound we make when strumming.

Well, first you have to know that strumming is the rhythmic part of the performance, the one that will add flavor to your song and will give it the intention ... whether you want to play a ballad, or something much more moved . Now I'm going to give you some tips so that you can improve your strumming and can play whatever you want whenever you want.

Position:

One of the most important parts of being able to play is having a good position. We are going to place our Ukulele with the back cover glued to our chest, with our arm that is in the part of the box we are going to press so that the Uke does not fall off, and our hand will be free, making a small lever with which we are going to strum. Then we place the arm a little inclined up from the shoulder to be able to have freedom in our hand that will handle the frets and make the chords.

Ready! You already have a good posture and position, now we go to what follows

Strumming movement:

For the strings to sound we have to make them vibrate by "hitting" them with our fingers. For this we will place our fingers in the same position that we use to crack them, only without placing so much pressure on them. Then try making a complete movement of your arm, from elbow to wrist, going up and down as if stroking the strings at the same time, without being abrupt and only with the nails of your fingers, mainly the middle that is resting on your thumb. Relax your hand and arm, make it a natural movement, not mechanical, the less you try to do it, the better it will come out.

Good! You know how to do the strum movement, now ... to give it rhythm.

Rhythm:

As you know, each song has a different rhythm, and although you will be learning different and more complicated strums, we always recommend starting with the most basic ones:

Down, Up, Down, Up.

Down, Down, Up, Up.

Down, Down, Down, Up.

Start doing these exercises, you will see that you will soon improve and you will be able to play the rhythms you want, it is just a matter of practicing.

I hope this blog has helped you, that you learn something new and if it already came out, record yourself playing, upload a story to instagram and tag us, together we will improve day by day.
