What are the chords called?

Aloha Ukeamigos!

Today we are going to talk about something very important and that we believe that everyone who enters the world of music should know:

Chords

When we start playing the Ukulele we want to play our favorite songs and for that we need to play chords, they are going to create the harmony for our songs ... And how do we learn them? well, generally we are going to look for TABs or tablatures on the internet ... the tablatures consist of some small drawings where the frets of the Ukulele are shown and the position where we are going to place our fingers to make the chord.

What is a chord?

The chord is the name that is given to the union of three or more notes that are played simultaneously and create a harmonic sound, in short it is what we do by placing our fingers on the frets and strumming the strings to get the sound, what you hear is the chord. And how do I know what chord it is? Well, each chord has its name.

Chord names

There are 7 musical notes, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La and Si. Each of these notes will give a name to a chord, this is due to the sound they give thanks to the dominant note, that is, the one that sounds or stands out the most.

Returning to the tablatures, we have the drawings with the notes, and a letter that comes up, this letter gives the name to the chord, we all know them, for example: C, G, Am, F, etc ... Why do they have these letters?

Very simple, the musical notes (Do, Re, Mi ...) are not called the same in English as in Spanish, for example, a Do in English is called C, that is why that letter appears above the chord.

Why do some have an m (Am)?

This happens because there are different types of chords, including Major chords that are natural, and Minor chords, these have a variation in the notes of the natural or major chord.

Major or natural chords are written with just the letter, for example: D is a D major, but if we add an m, Dm, it would be a D minor.

It is important to know that each letter means a note, so we will be able to better identify the chords when playing and it is much better to refer to them with their musical name.

We hope it has been useful to you, Aloha !!
