When we buy a musical instrument we must consider that there is a big difference between Quality and Beautiful. So here you have a small guide on how to know that you are acquiring a good quality instrument that will accompany you for years.
The brand will always be a total support in terms of quality, before buying your ukulele explore the different brands that are on the market. Luna, Kala, Córdoba, Caraya, La Sevillana, ANueNue, Fender, Copacabana, Etc ... And the list goes on and on.
You can find reviews of many of these brands on YouTube or on ukulele forums so that you know the experiences of different people with different brands.
When you are buying your ukulele ask what wood it is, currently all standard ukuleles with a good level of quality use Laminated Mahogany or Solid Mahogany. A low quality wood for an instrument is the pinalbete, This does not mean that it will sound bad, what it affects is in its life time and how it will absorb moisture once you take it out of the package.
This point goes apart from the previous one because here what we will see is how the sound affects the decoration that makes two woods come together. The soundboard is made of pinalbete (usually) and is coated with a thin layer of other wood for what purpose? give the appearance of what is not.
How do I check if it is a fake wood? Easy! Look at the mouth of the soundboard and right at the edges you will notice the division of the woods, another aspect is that the wood inside the soundboard is the same color tone as the wood that claims to be our ukulele.
These fake wood coverings make our ukulele not sound good or not heard with an adequate volume since they are covering the main pores of the instrument.
One of the reasons we like the brands we handle is that they are handmade. Look at the stamps that ukuleles have! If it says "Handmade" or "crafted handmade" you already did it. These ukuleles are constantly being reviewed in their elaboration. That's why they are so good!
Usually the ukuleles are factory-set with the best strings in the market. Aquila, for example, is one of the best strings since they are made of a material that mimics the texture of the gut strings and is a brand used by a wide variety of brands. Check your ukulele and if it has the same thickness strings, they are not giving you good quality strings.
