What is a metronome?

The metronome is an instrument that was invented to standardize a tempo in a work, this means that to play a certain piece of music whose author put a defined tempo (velocity), with the metronome we can faithfully represent that work.

The tempo of a piece is marked by pulses or beats, these pulses are constant and have a feeling of repetition generally every four pulses, this is known as the 4 / 4 compass (To know more about this click here)

The metronome was invented in 1816 "Maelzel's Metronome." The original text of the Maelzel patent in England (1815) can be downloaded.Initially, the metronome consisted of a pendulum with a pulley that could be regulated to mark a slower or faster time according to the required speed.

The creation of this device was born from the need to have an instrument that could precisely define the speed of a musical piece. Prior to their invention, it was common for composers to use the average human pulse as a reference speed, which at rest equals approximately 80 beats per minute.

The first notable composer who established metric indications in his compositions was the German Ludwig Van Beethoven in 1817, in the classical era. Curiously, Beethoven himself, already in Romanticism, said that for the new music, freer and full of elements that altered the tempo, the metronome was an abomination.

Problems with the metronome?

Everyone who makes music from beginners to experts has problems with the metronome (at different levels). This is because we are not precise 100% machines and we also get tired after some time. That is why it is important to practice with the metronome at slow speeds at the beginning.

As personal advice I can tell you that the slower you master the metronome the better your mental calculation will be so as not to lose the tempo at high speeds.

Go back to the metronome your friend and that instead that beat sounds like "You go wrong" makes you sound a "Let's go together". Thanks to technology, today we can make louder or more "human" sounds, for example, I really like the sound of the cowbell in the metronome because it is as if a percussionist is supporting me in the rhythm.
