Origin of the Derbake or Darbuka?

Origin of the Derbake or Darbuka?

In TAMBORERIA we have a wide variety of drums. We are visited by many people who do not know what a derbake is or other people call it Darbuka, the point here is that both refer to the same drum.

Darbouka or Derbake is a bowl-shaped Middle Eastern percussion instrument that can be made of ceramic, metal or plastic and is covered with animal skin, it is also known by the names of doumbek, dumbelek, derbocka and darabukka. The origin of this instrument dates back to Babylonian antiquity, that is, approximately 1100 before Christ.

The cup-shaped single-head hand drum is an old drum. It was originally played in Egypt, Armenia and Turkey. Darbuka is considered the leader of percussion instruments in the Middle East. The origin of darbuka has its roots in oriental music, where distinctive rhythms are quite common. However, in recent years, Darbuka made his way into Western music.

The authentic darbukas are made at home and are made of clay or wood with goatskin stretched over the top with rope, leather straps or nails.

Contemporary versions of darbuka can be made of aluminum, copper or fiberglass. See the images below.

The fact that the drum is simple distinguishes it from other musical instruments of the family, such as the tabla, dhol and pakhawaj. Since the instrument has a long history of being used for belly dance music in the Middle East, it is also known as the belly dance drum.

Chalice drums are one of the most important broad classes of drums, which are played largely in Asia, North Africa and Eastern Europe. It is widely used for festivities such as weddings, ceremonies, festivals or meetings of bellydance dancers.

If you want to know a little more about the music of the Middle East, here is a video of a group that we had the pleasure of recording and doing a small interview.
