The best Djembes: How to choose a Djembe?

by Shopify API February 22

djembes

You have to take into account some general things when you are going to buy a musical instrument such as the brand or factory of origin, the plan we have for this, for example: If it is for children, beginners or experts and finally the design, since it is an instrument that will accompany us for a long time.

There are two kinds of Djembes, the traditional and the modern

Traditional djembe

This Djembe is the best known and also what you can find in various sizes. The wood is usually Lengue, Iroko or Mahogany, carved by hand, of great weight. The skin is still natural goat or calf and it is held and tensioned with a non-elastic cord to prevent the patch from loosening or not being evenly tensioned.

The advantage of having a patch of natural skin is that it will give you a totally unique sound since no skin is equal to another (same as wood), These small variations make your instrument 100% personal.

Djembé Modern

Instead of using a natural patch, this djembé uses a synthetic one and is strained like most modern percussion, with a steel ring and screws to give a firmer and more uniform tension. For this reason it is easier to change the patch when it requires it.

Thanks to its synthetic patch it is considered an easy-to-play djember since the patch was manufactured so that it resonates specifically. Changing the patch will not change the sound as they are manufactured equal.

Choosing size

For the size we must take into account the sound we want, the bigger our djembe is going to give sounds deeper and and resonant but it will weigh on us if we want to load it and walk while we play. Small sizes are more for solo djembes, since they give you a more acute and accurate sound. The djembe that is used usually to guide the assembly of percussion is from 10. ''

Design

There are currently several designs and different woods are used to create these instruments. Something that must be taken into account is that if it is engraved or carved it is not very deep since a good djembe has to have very solid wood to give a firm sound. So choose the one you like best and go with your style.
