The skin of the Djembe.

The skin of the Djembe.

What is the skin of the djembe? How is the skin process?
Well, in CDMX DRUM we are going to help you solve all those doubts and talk a little about the skins.

Go for pencil and paper!

Drum heads are typically made of goatskin and more rarely can be antelopes, zebra, deer or calf skin. West African goat skins are known to djembe musicians as having a different sound than domesticated goats in more temperate climates.
Goats raised in West Africa experience a rougher existence, a different climate and different diets, which apparently hardens the skins in a way that affects their sound and quality.

Goats raised in America and Europe are known that their skin is softer and breaks more easily under stress.
The djembe has also generated a lot of imitations made of synthetic materials. The explosion of drum circles, as well as the use of djembes in pop and rock ensembles, have led to an increase in synthetic drums. These drums have plastic housings or resin composite materials, mechanical metal tuning instead of traditional strings, and often plastic instead of goatskin heads.

HEEEY! ARE YOU STILL TAKING NOTE?

Although more and more percussionists enjoy playing calfskin, goatskin is still used for most African djembes. Goat skins are cheaper and more readily available. They are also easier to play and tune. Unless you are a very experienced percussionist, I recommend that you choose a goat.

With or without fur?

It is certainly tempting to buy a skin with the hair already removed. That means less work for you and a softer feel of the finished drum. However, they may have been shaved with chemicals or in wet conditions, which weakens them or produces a rather dull sound. Therefore, African drum builders usually shave the skins AFTER assembly. That also gives you the option of covering the rings with pretty skin. But the choice is yours.

This is all for this blog but, later we'll talk about how to identify a good djembe skin.
