What is the difference between a drummer and a percussionist?

When they tell us drummer we mean a person who plays the drums but when we say percussionist our mind can come images of someone playing the timpani, congas, bongos or an endless number of percussive instruments but not the drums. to the drummers of the percussionists? What is right?

The terms we use to call musicians are related to what they play, if you play the saxophone they will call you a saxophone player; if you play the violin you will be a violinist; and so with several instruments, but if you play a drum that is not the drummer they will call you percussionist or drummer and if they see you play the drums ... it will happen the same as before you will be called drummer and not percussionist.

We have to be clear that the term percussionist is ambivalent since this word refers to a person who plays a percussion instrument and especially if he dedicates himself to it professionally. In these terms a drummer is also a percussionist as he is playing a percussion instrument.

If we break down the drums we find that this instrument is a set of drums, which can also be used separately to perform different musical pieces. The battery is a set of percussions in specific four percussions; The hype comes from Europe, the timbales drums and timbales (toms) from Africa and China, and the dishes that are derived from Turkey and China.

This set of percussions at the beginning was played by two people in a common way, as time went by, addition was added, an important one was the pedal (1910) for the bass drum and so this set could be played by a single person.

In the battery can be placed more attachments such as cowbells, bums, bongs, pads, variety of dishes, and how much you want to imagine. Although the drums are a complete instrument, there are certain sounds that you cannot give as well as congas, timpani, or djembe.

So far we can say that a drummer is a percussionist who is specifically responsible for a set of drums that has been standardized over the years, a set known as drums.

What about the other percussion instruments?

Although a percussion scheme has been standardized to perform music, it will never match the sound offered by the infinity of percussive instruments. Some instruments require a certain technique or are too large to be within reach of our chair.

An example is the percussion ensemble of some orchestra, this ensemble must be performed by more than one person, if this set of drums had a name such as "drummers" Each of these people would be called drummer making reference to what they can execute some element of this set. How there are also endless possibilities to make drum sets to each of these people are called percussionists.

In conclusion we can say that the percussionist is the one who can play some percussion instrument, and drummer is that percussionist specialized in the percussion ensemble called drummer.
