We have received several questions about whether left-handed people can play a ukulele like the ones we normally handle in the store or if a special one is needed.
This time we talk about the options you have when it comes to playing the ukulele if you are left-handed and their advantages and disadvantages. Check out the tips we have prepared for you.
Normally, the right-handed ones make the chords with the left hand and the strumming with the right, when turning the ukulele the right hand is the one that makes the positions in the mast and the left one that strums.
Should be change the strings instead of just tuning as the strings have specific thicknesses designed for the standard tuning of the ukulele (GCEA) and the strings to be tuned in another tone of which they are designed can result in very loose or very tight strings. This is why the order of the strings and the left-handed ukulele tuning It is done as in the following diagram:
In this way the ukulele is played for left-handed mirrors as a right-handed man would play it.
The main disadvantage of this method is that if your ukulele is an electroacoustic or cutaway model and you turn the cut and the pickup would be on the opposite side and that would hinder your access.
This way gives you the benefit of play the chords with the right and make the strum with the left avoiding the movement of changing the strings of place.
The disadvantages of this are that, as in the previous option, if the ukulele is electroacoustic the controls would be down and as now the strings are in reverse order you would be strumming upside down, a strum down would sound like one up and vice versa.
It may sound like a joke but there are people who are still left-handed prefer to learn to play the ukulele as someone skilled would.
